Hip replacement surgery is the definitive management and the only possible cure for severe hip arthritis. It is major surgery but it is successful in more than 90% of cases and it was declared “the operation of the 20th century.” The procedure involves an incision on the lateral side of your hip, the worn part of the joint (the “socket” and the head of the thigh bone) is replaced with metal components fixed either by press fit or cement to the bone and the new prosthetic joint bearing can be metal on hard plastic (polyethylene), ceramic on hard plastic or ceramic on ceramic, depending from case to case. Aftercare involves a stay in hospital between 2 and 4 days, depending on how well the postoperative pain is controlled and how quickly you regain confidence in mobilising. After discharge, you will be followed-up in the Clinic at 6 weeks and 6 months post operation (more frequently if necessary).
